Death of an Old Resident
There passed away at her residence in Galt, on Friday night of last week, at the ripe age of 87 years, Mrs. James Harris. The deceased lady was relict of the late James Harris, well known in the earlier days of Galt as one of its prominent citizens. As far back as the year 1832, Mr. Harris was a resident of the then village, and we believe it was in that year that he caused to be erected the building in which for many years he and his brother Augustus carried on the brewing business. These premises, which were built we believe by the late Col. Rich, are at present occupied by Messrs. J. A. R. Elliott as soap works. About the year 1835 Mr. Harris married Miss Stewart, the lady whose death we now announce, and a few years afterward, about 1840, or its neighborhood, the stone house in which the deceased lady has since continuously resided was erected. Her husband died many years ago and since that time the deceased has lived a very retired, quiet life. Of late years the frailties of old age have made themselves apparent; but notwithstanding their presence she was always cheerful and had a pleasant word for her old friends. Her declining days were made as comfortable as possible by the loving care and attention of relatives and friends and she passed away in the fall and certain hope begotten of a Christian faith.
The funeral on Monday was largely attended, the remains being interred in Trinity Church Cemetery. Rev. J. K. Smith conducted the services at the house.
