- Body of vet technician Nadia Gehl found on a path near her Kitchener home
by Greg Mercer, Melinda Dalton, Brent Davis The Record
KITCHENER - Teams of black-clad police clutching assault rifles shut down a busy west-end neighbourhood yesterday, after the niece of a prominent criminal lawyer was left for dead in a snowbank near her house. Nadia Gehl, 28, a veterinary technician and assistant manager of a toy store, was found on a path not far from her Watercress Court home by two people waiting at a bus stop. Neighbours said they heard gunshots around 8: 45 a.m., about the time Gehl was walking to catch a bus to her job at Toys R Us. She was rushed to hospital, where she was declared dead. Police are calling the death suspicious but homicide detectives couldn't shed light on how the young woman died. Her stunned family was also in the dark. Gehl was last seen alive by her husband, Ron Cyr, at 8 a.m., when he left for work, according to her father. "We don't have any idea what happened, or why it happened," said Nicholas Gehl, a local real estate lawyer, visibly shaken in an interview yesterday afternoon. "We don't understand this." Her husband works as an assistant to her uncle Steve Gehl, a prominent local criminal lawyer who specializes in mental health cases.
