    • John A. Zinger

After long and painful suffering, exactly eight months to the day he first fell ill with an appendicitis infection, John A. Zinger of Detroit, eldest son of local inn-keeper William Zinger and son-in-law of Sheriff John Motz, died Sunday afternoon. On Sunday, March 8th of this year, the deceased was quite suddenly stricken by an infection of the appendix and had to undergo an operation the following day. Thereby, it was discovered that the appendix had already burst and weeks passed before the patient recovered.

After he had recovered, he came to Berlin on May 6th with his wife and child on a visit, but after several days, as the result of severe pains in his lower abdomen, had to take to his bed again. Two weeks later, he was taken to the hospital here, where a large ulcer was removed from his right side. After several weeks, when the infection had cleared up and there was hope for a final recovery, another ulcer formed in the left side and in the month of August, another operation was necessary.

The formation of pus, however, did not cease and, the middle of September, the patient was moved to the residence of his father-in-law on Weber Street. Slowly, his strength lessened, but the patient bore everything calmly, meekly, and without complaint.

Last Friday, his condition became disturbing and Sunday morning, the first signs of approaching death appeared. He became increasingly weaker, and 15 minutes before 1 o'clock, he fell into eternal sleep, (surrounded by wife, parents, parents-in-law, and siblings) from which only an awakening in the beyond is possible.

The deceased was born April 16, 1871 in Ambleside, Bruce County; after he grew up, he entered an apothecary business in Teeswater as apprentice, and for which profession he continued to prepare himself later in Toronto and Detroit. In 1898, he opened an apothecary business in the latter city and ever since devoted himself to this profession. In October 1902, he began as well the study of medicine in the Michigan School of Medicine in Detroit, in order to qualify himself for the profession of physician.

On June 28, 1900 the deceased married Louise, the second daughter of John Motz, from which marriage, a daughter, Leona, was born. He belonged to the Windsor Branch No. 1 of the C.M.B.A. and was, in addition, secretary of the Pingree Council of the Royal Arcanum in Detroit. Burial follows on Wednesday morning of this week. At nine o'clock a requiem mass takes place in the Catholic church and afterwards, burial in the Catholic cemetery. Members of the C.M.B.A. of Berlin, to which the father, four brothers and brother-in-law of the deceased belong, as well as those from St. Agatha, St. Clements, and New Germany, will walk ahead of the coffin. [Poem follows]
