    • According to an article in the 1984 newspaper, The Advertiser, this red brick house was built by Gideon Hamacher in 1910, and was uniquely built with winding stair cases, up to three layers of brick, exterior verandas and lots of bay windows. This is a Victorian-style house, with a white roof and trim.
      The Red Lion Tavern was formerly located on this site, but it burned down in the early 1900's, and the house was built on this site. Former owners of the land include James Hope and Austin Bricker, who was the roads superintendent for the Township of North Dumfries in 1939.

    • Gideon Hamacher Died in His 94th year.

      Gideon Hamacher of RR 2, Petersburg, one of the oldest native Wilmot Township residents, died on Monday at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital in his 94th year, following a short illness. He was born March 5th, 1864, in Wilmot Centre, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hamacher, and lived nearly all his life in Wilmot township. Before his retirement he carried on a lumber business. His wife, the former, Louisa Pfohl predeceased him five years ago. Surviving are three sons, Gordon. of New Dundee; Russell, of Windsor; and Clifford, Petersburg; three daughters, Mrs. Emery, (Alrneta) Strome, Waterloo; Mrs. Willard (Ruby) Haas, Petersburg; and Mrs. Roy (Myrtle) Diefenbaker, of Elmira. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One son, Quinn, and a daughter, Verge, predeceased him. The funeral was held on Wednesday with service at the Ratz-Bechtel funeral home, Kitchener, and burial in Union Cemetery, New Dundee. Rev. Glenn Strome, a grandson of Mr. Hamacher, conducted the funeral service.
