August Henry Wittmaak opened a hardware store on the south side on October 2nd, 1882, sold it to B. H. Kopeman about 1892. Meantime he was appointed local agent of C.P.R. Tickets and Telegraphs and of Dominion Express Company and for years conveyed passengers and express shipments by horse-drawn vehicle to the C.P.R. Station at Galt to meet certain trains.
He moved from Queen Street into a small building at the street end of Ike Queens Hotel shed, later occupied as a shoe repair shop by John Wilkinson and after him, by George Hilker. When the Trolley line was built to the Guelph Road in 1895 or 96 they had only a small building. Later on the present one was erected and Wittmaak then moved into it. He was assessor of Hespeler from 1897-1913 and did a good job.
