    • A SAD OCCURANCE

Milton Devitt, of Freeman, Formerly of Floradale, Suffocated Under a Straw Stack

Last Monday, about 11 o'clock am, Mr. Milton Devitt, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Devitt, formerly of Floradale, but since eleven years ago, resident at Freeman, Halton County, while engaged in loading straw off a stack, was covered by a falling mass of straw weighting several tons, and suffered death by suffocation before he could be released from his perilous position. Deceased and his only brother were engaged in helping the young son of a neighbor who had called for a load of straw to load his wagon when the portion of the stack which had been left standing after the larger portion had been cut off and remove, became top heavy and fell. Milton did not notice the danger but following a shout of warning given by his brother he made a spring for safety but failed to get out of the way in time. The falling mass which consisted of straw that had lain on the stack for several years struck him on the head and straight cut edge, crushing him to the ground with his face buried in the loose straw. He spoke only a few words but showed signs of life for some time. Although his brother and his young companion lost no time but worked frantically and intelligently they were unable to release him before life had flown. They had reached his hands but were unable to extricate him on account of the heavy weight above him. No one else was in sight or within earshot, his parents being in Elmira visiting friends at the time. Their feelings, when the sad news came to them may be better imagined than ? (Image smudged, unreadable for next few lines.) … the age of 42 years and 8 months, was highly respected by all who knew him in his old home and equally so in his new home. He was a young man of high principles, kind disposition and intelligent above the average. He was unmarried and leaves to mourn the departure of a dutiful son and a kind brother, his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Geo. Klink of Elmira and Mrs. A. K. Jansen of Berlin and his brother Irvine. The remains will be brought to Elmira today (Thursday) where they will be interred in the Union Cemetery, after a short service at the residence of Mr. Geo. Klink, at 2: 30 pm. The service proper will be held in the Elmira Presbyterian church after the burial.
