  • Notes
    • FORSTER, MOFFIT was the subject of an obituary notice in the Canadian Medical Association Journal of July 1915.

Dr, Moffit Forster one of the oldest graduates of the Toronto school of medicine died early in May in his 95th, year. Born in Streetsville in 1831 he studied medicine under the guidance of Jr. Freeman of Georgetown, and later graduated from the old Toronto school in 1865, Dr, Forster practised first in Thorndale, and then in London and afterwards in Kitchener and Palmerston, he retired from active practice in 1907. Dr. Forster was one of the few remaining links connecting us with the the days of the old Toronto school one of the pioneers of medical practice in Upper Canada, it is interesting to note that he had conducted a milling business before devoting his time to the study of medicine.

According to the Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, he commenced practice in Erin in 1865, and he practised in Thorndale for 14 years, "being coroner of Middlesex County for 10 years and also local superintendent of schools for W. Nissouri." In 1884 he moved to Palmerston where in 1894 he was appointed coroner for Wellington County.

The University of Toronto Monthly for June 1925 points out that he also practised at Acton and Lynden.

On his retirement in 1907 he moved to Toronto where he died on May 5, 1925 aged 94 years.

His career in Berlin is outlined in a few brief newspaper notices:

Berliner Journal June 10, 1880: M, Forster opens apothecary store in Berlin. Calls himself Chemist & Apothecary.

Issue of March 31, 1881: account of operation at which he assisted.

Dumfries Reformer Oct. 27, 1881: Dr. M. Forster of Berlin has purchased the drug business and practice of Dr.. Morton, who has moved to Guelph. No other mention of Morton has been found.

Berliner Journal February 2, 1882 - Mr. C. J. Nordhausen has bought Dr. Foster's (sic) residence on the corner of Church and Benton streets for $3000.00.

He presumably left Berlin at that time, but no indication has been discover to account for his time between then and his arrival in Palmerston.
