    • A SAD SUICIDE

A former Berlin Citizen said to have ended his own life last night in Detroit

Peter Burger, caretaker of the Berlin High School, received a sad telegram, this morning from Detroit, briefly saying that his son Peter, a barber in that city, had committed suicide last night and asking him to go over. Mr. Burger, as is well known, cannot read or speak much English and so was at a loss as to what the strange message could mean. Taking it over to a neighbor's house the sad intelligence of his son having ended his life by his own hand broke in upon him and his grief was intense and the scrap of information received afforded little or no satisfaction. The young man in question is about twenty-seven years of age, and left Berlin some eight years ago to the learn the barbering with a step-brother in Detroit. He was married and leaves a small family and wife behind. He has for some time been running a shop of his own and was thought to be doing well. It is three years since he visited home or been seen by the members of the family in Berlin. About a month ago, a brother wrote to the unfortunate young man but received no reply hence no reason can be assigned for the rash act. The message is supposed to be from the dead man's wife, who in her trouble and sorrow failed to attach her signature to the despatch. Anthony Burger, a brother and August Bervig a step-brother of the man, left this afternoon on the three o clock train for Detroit to investigate the matter and make arrangements for the burial. It is not yet known whether the body will be brought here for interment or not. The grief-stricken father could not go over, owing to his various duties that demand his attention. His friends will no doubt extend to him every sympathy in this trying moment and not let the fact of the son having found a suicide's grave, check the flow of comfort to the bereaved family.
