Notes |
- GILCHRIST, PETER
Seventy-three years of a long life were spent in Puslinch and he was personally known to a large number of people, many of whom had pride and satisfaction in counting him as a friend. His departure on April 28, 1916, at 9 o'clock, age 87 years, 6 months and 6 days, at his home in Puslinch, will cause regret, corresponding to the unusual extent of his acquaintance. He was a good citizen, an honourable and companionable man, whose popularity was founded on character and ability and he was one of the earliest pioneers, who took an active part in introducing and maintaining the municipal and educational advantages we now enjoy. When a young man he sailed on the Great Lakes, finally settling on rear lot 10 in 1855, where he resided ever since. As councillor, a school trustee and for many years of the late Queen's reign, as justice of the peace, his influence was widely felt. His departure from this life almost ends a legend of the grand men, who added so many fair homes to a great empire, without war or havoc. He was born in Kintyre, Argyleshire in 1828 and came to Canada in 1843. The funeral was from his residence on Monday, May 1st at 2: 30. He was interred in Killean Cemetery, where his wife, children, father, mother and brothers peacefully sleep, a large number of friends and relatives paying their last tribute of respect, for his memory will long linger. Rev. Small of Hespeler, Rev. Lawrence of Morriston, John Martin and William McAllister, elders of Crieff Church, despite their honourable years, graced the occasion with their presence. Pallbearers were all descendants of friends and relatives: John Gilchrist, John J. Gilchrist, Hector Gilchrist, Jacob Cooper, John Robertson, Marshall Ferguson.
"With no work day woes to wound you.
With the peace of God around you.
Sleep old pioneer. "
