    • HERTEL, Helen Isabel "Entered into life more abundant" Helen Isabel Hertel of St. Luke's Place, Cambridge, on Saturday, March 24, 2012, in her 98th year, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Beloved wife of the late Leonard Richard Hertel to whom she was married for fifty-five years until his death in 1996. Dearly loved mother of Paul and his wife Ute of Amherstburg, Catherine and her husband Don Upper of Conestogo, Gregory and his wife Karen Smith and their children Hannah and Madelene of Toronto. Born in Hespeler, she was predeceased by her parents Levi Hulbert Fisher (1916) and Ethel May Keffer (1972). Living briefly in Manor, Saskatchewan as a young child, Mrs. Hertel returned to Hespeler with her mother after the death of her father. She attended Hespeler Central Public School and Galt Collegiate Institute where, while playing in the school orchestra, she not only met Len but also continued her life-long love of concerts, opera and classical music. Mrs. Hertel worked in the offices of Dominion Woollens in Hespeler during the 1930's leaving only to get married in 1941 when she and Len moved to Fort William, Ontario. She and Len returned to Preston and subsequently Hespeler after WW II where they resided the rest of their lives. Mrs. Hertel was a faithful and active member of St. Andrew's Hespeler Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. She was an Honorary Member of the Women's Missionary Society and Honorary President of St. Andrew's Hespeler Presbyterian Women. Through the years she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, CGIT Leader and member of the midweek Bible Study Group. Active in her community throughout her life, Mrs. Hertel was a founding member of the Hespeler VON Board as well as the Hespeler Home & School Association. Amongst her many activities she was a member of the Hespeler Red Cross Society, where she helped organize Blood Donor Clinics and planned social events and arranged transportation for local senior citizens. She volunteered and worked with the CNIB, The United Way, The Canadian Cancer Society, The South Waterloo Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and The Cambridge Committee for Ten Days of World Development. Her interest in literature and current events was demonstrated in her work with the Hespeler Book Club and her love of music and performing arts found her in the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan as presented by the Preston Operatic Society. Ever busy in her senior years, she had served more recently on the St. Luke's Place Auxiliary. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at the Lounsbury Funeral Home , 1766 Franklin Blvd., Cambridge on Thursday, March 29 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Hespeler Presbyterian Church, 73 Queen St. East, Cambridge, on Friday, March 30 at 2 p.m. with The Rev. Scott McAndless officiating. Interment will follow immediately at the New Hope Cemetery in Hespeler Cambridge.
