- From an email from Allan Detweiler 9 Sep 2007 to Darryl Bonk
Hello Darryl,
Back in 2005 an article appeared in the Record about the old cemetery located in Cambridge behind the OPP station. You are mentioned in that article. You will also be aware of the article in Canadian German Folklore about this cemetery. In that book, it mentions that the grave of Catharine Clemens still stands there. Here's the rest of the story. I was part of a tour that visited that site, and I was upset by the fact that the section of this property next to the car repair place was not being kept up, and in fact was a dumping ground for old car parts. In among the car parts was the fallen over gravestone of Catharine Clemens. I felt strongly that Catharines grave should be moved to Wanner Cemetery like others previously on that site. So, I started digging where I thought the grave might be located. I dug down a bout 3 feet, and thought I saw signs the soil had been disturbed at one time. I then called the Region archeology department, and Scarlett Janusus (sp??) [Scarlett Janusas] came out to see what I had done. She gave me proper hell, but after probing around with her hand tools, declared this was not the precise location of Catharines burial. I had also spoken with the person that looked after the Wanner Cemetery, Russel Sheerer, and not too long after, he informed me he had removed the gravestone, and erected it at the Wanner Cemetery.
So, Catherine remains interred at the old cemetery, but her marker is at Wanner. If you are interested, I can show you where the stone was removed from, but because it was fallen over, there was no way of knowing precisely where Catherine was interred
