Moyer,MagdalenaMaggie-1882-1958-raft'WRM.jpg Maggie Moyer (1882-1958) received a Popular Mechanics Magazine in the mail wherein were the plans to build a barrel boat or raft. She had teachers as boarders and at the dinner table, she decided that she would be able to build just such a craft. The teachers wagered with her and a deal was made that she would not only build the craft alone, but would also paddle the craft down the Grand River from Bloomingdale to Bridgeport. The craft was completed and on October 29, 1921 she ventured out in her homemade craft. She sailed from Bloomingdale to Bridgeport to be greeted by several hundreds of spectators.
