| Notes |
- WEBB, JOSEPH HUGHES was born on February 20, 1847 near Aurora, and he died in Waterloo on January 26, 1921. His father was a farmer. He married Helen Buchanan of South Dumfries on March 14, 1872, and they had a daughter.
He went to the Newmarket Grammar School and the Toronto Normal School and then taught for three years. He entered Victoria University and graduated with honors in medicine in 1870. He took postgraduate work in New York, and began to practice in Sheffield with Dr. Lundy. At the end of 1871 he began to practice in Ayr, notice of which appeared in the Dumfries Reformer of November 29, together with his card.
Dr. Webb
This gentleman, who has during the past two years been assistant to Dr. Lundy of Beverley, has commenced practice in the Village of Ayr. He was a student for five years under Professor Geikie, of Toronto, and for a time attended Bellevue Hospital in New York, so that he has an extensive knowledge of his profession, and being affable and popular as well as talented, will no doubt build up an extensive practice in Ayr.

The same paper a year later, on November 6th. had news of his move to New Dundee.
Medical. The lamented death of Dr. Corsan left an opening for a good physician here, which we are glad to say has just been worthily filled. Dr. Webb, of Ayr, has acceded to the request of a number of the late Dr. Corsan's friends and removed to this village. He is welcome.
He remained in New Dundee until 1877 when he left for Waterloo, the Galt Reporter remarked:
May 11, 1877. We are informed that Dr. Webb of New Dundee, has sold out his practice to Dr. A. H. Millar, of Toronto.
Dr. Webb goes to Waterloo where he takes the practice of Dr. Walden who is retiring from the practise of his profession.
The Dumfries Reformer of May 9 had more extensive coverage:
It is with feelings of the deepest regret and sorrow that the many friends of Dr. J. H. Webb in Dundee and vicinity learn of the removal from their midst of the above mentioned gentleman. By his kind and courteous manner, and his almost unprecedented success as a physician, he has now the good will, confidence and esteem of all with whom he came in contact. He came here over four years ago highly recommended and since that time he has more than proved himself worthy of his then reputation. His departure will therefore be greatly felt by all. He goes to Waterloo to succeed Dr. Walden, who is retiring from the profession. The good people of Waterloo have reason to rejoice in proportion as we are sorrowful.
The following week a correction pointed out that Dr. Walden was not giving up practice.
In Waterloo besides an extensive practice, he joined the Mutual Life Assurance Co. in 1881 as Assistant Medical Director, in 1885 becoming Medical Director. He held a position with the company for a total of forty years. He was also a director of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance for 14 years.
He was an active participant in the affairs of the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital, serving on the advisory board for many years.
In 1886 he formed a partnership with Dr. Armitage, the duration of this arrangement being unknown. In 1904 following an illness, he took as a partner Dr. W. J. Fischer who had looked after his practice during his illness. This time the arrangement lasted until July 1911 when it was dissolved.
The Daily Telegraph of September 17. 1914 commented on "another accident by Dr. Webb and his auto, this time with a street car or a train." It sounds as though this was a common occurrence•
Although he had cut down on his practice, he continued to see patients. The Chronicle Telegraph said of him:
Blessed with a strong constitution and unusual energy, providence happily permitted him to continue his work up to the hour when death summoned him.
This took place suddenly on January 26, 1921 when he was 74 years of age. He was survived by his wife and a daughter.
The Telegraph of January 29. 1921 said of him:
The sudden and lamented death of Dr. J. H. Webb last Wednesday morning, January 26, 1921 marks the passing of another sterling character of the type that has done so much to raise the standard of Canadian citizenship in this community, where he has spent over forty years of his useful and well rounded life in the practice of his medical profession, and medical director of the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada. At every point he has lived in close touch with the social, political, municipal and religious life of the people and no one can estimate the good work he has done so one can measure the beneficial influence he exercised over the lives of his fellow citizens. Suffering and distress always appealed to his warm heart, and those whom he helped had an instinctive consciousness that his kind of assistance, professionally or otherwise would never be known to a third party. In the death of Dr. Webb a very large circle of friends will find themselves bereft of the kind of friend we can ill afford to lose, and the Twin City has lost a most worthy citizen.
