Heart Attack Kills Pastor at Picnic
Rev. Schildroth, Head of Lutheran Congregation in City for 14 Years, Dies
The Rev. Herbert E. Schildroth, of 2455 Mt. Elliott, pastor of the Bethel Lutheran Church, Mt. Elliott and Hendriks, died of a heart at 4:15 p. m. Saturday in Chandler Park while playing volleyball at the church picnic. He had suffered two previous heart attacks in the last 10 days.
He had been pastor of the Bethel parish for the last 14 years. At the time of his death he was president of the Michigan Synod of the United Lutheran Church and chairman of the Synod's mission board. He also had served for eight years on the Chicago Seminary board.
He was born in Chesley, Ont. He was educated at the Waterloo (Ont.) College and the Waterloo Seminary. He served as pastor in Guelph, Ont., and in Windsor before coming to Detroit.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Victoria Schildroth, and a daughter Evelyn. Also his mother, Mrs. Christine Schildroth, and a brother John, of Chesley. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

FORMER SULLIVAN RESIDENT PASSED. SUDDENLY, DETROIT
Rev. H. E. Schildroth, Pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dropped Dead
CHESLEY, Aug. 23-Many friends in Chesley and Sullivan township were shocked and saddened when it was learned on Sunday that Rev. Herbert E. Schildroth, pastor of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran church in Detroit, Mich., one of the largest churches of that denomination in Detroit, had died suddenly. The information received was that he dropped dead as the result of a heart attack while attending a church picnic.
He was the son of the late Charles Schildroth, and Mrs. Schildroth, of Sullivan township, where he was born 49 years ago. He received his education in Sullivan, at Chesley High School and at the Lutheran Seminary at Waterloo, and a his ordination into the ministry was pastor at Guelph and at Windsor, going to Detroit 14 years ago, where he has been the popular pastor of Bethel Lutheran Evangelical church ever since.
He is survived by his wife. the former Victoria Maass Bernhardt, of Chesley, to whom he was married 20 years ago, and one daughter, Evelyn. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Chas. Schildroth, and a brother, John Schildroth, both residing in Sullivan, township. Deceased served last war. He visited Chesley last year and delivered the address at a memorial service held in one of the churches. He was known as a brilliant scholar and was decidedly popular with those who were honored with his acquaintance, and there will be sincere regret throughout the district at his sudden passing.
