- He cut the stone in the old bridge that still spans the Maquoketa, and for St Martin's church torn down 19 years before 1918, also the B F Crawford residence in East Cascade, which was the Mercer home, and the Byum residence on the Eastside.
As a Frontier Soldier, James participated in the frontier warfare against the Indians. On October 28, 1864, in Dubuque county, James became a member of Co. M 6th Iowa Calvary and spent the ensuing winter at Fort Randall, Dakota territory, accompaning the command under Gen. Sully in the expedition to Devil' Lake region during the summer of 1865. Later, he spent some time at Fort Berthold and Yankton, and on October 17, 1865, at Sioux City was mustered out with his regiment having spent one year in service.
James Ralph Mercer and Anna "Annie" Stewart were married on the 14 Nov 1872 in Cascade, Dubuque County, IA. To this union were born eight children: Effie Margaret, William Stewart, Nellie Ann, Cilena Grace "Lena", Mae Bell, Cora Louise, Rollo Crawford, and Ralph James.
James purchased the land that became the family farm from the United States Government in 1875. It is the northwest quarter of Section 35, Cedar Township, one mile southeast of Fonda.
He was the adjutant of the Fonda, IA G.A.R. post in 1895.
