Notes |
- Almost a Centenarian
There died at the residence of Mr. George Beemer, St. George, on the 8th May, Mr. William Knox, aged 93 years and 10 months. The deceased was a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, and emigrated to Canada when this portion was yet a wilderness. He settled upon a farm near Branchton, where he hewed out for himself and family a comfortable home. His partner in life was called away about eight years ago; and old age and its accompanying infirmities compelled him to give up his farm, and he went to live with his daughter (Mrs. Geo. Beemer) in St. George. He was living in the Cummings House in that village when it was burnt some months ago, and the old gentleman on that occasion escaped from a second storey window by means of a ladder. The deceased was a staunch Presbyterian, and was a regular attendant at his accustomed place of worship as long as he was able. He retained his faculties to the last, being able to red without the aid of glasses, and could wait upon himself as well as many a much younger man. His end became suddenly at last, but it did not find him unprepared. He was engaged in reading his Bible a few hours before he died, and passed away with a firm reliance upon the power of his Saviour.
Mr. Knox leaves three daughters - Mrs. John Brown, of Hullett; Mrs. McKinley, of Peel County; and Mrs. Beemer, of St. George. The old gentleman had received a good education in his youthful days and was a great reader, but took no active part in politics. The news of his death will be received with regret by many who knew him in days gone by only to respect him, as well as by those who have been brought more closely into contact with him during later years. His was a long life, indeed; but it closed as calmly as the sun sinks to rest in the evening of a fine summer day.
