- Mrs. Charles J. Nixon Passes
One of Ayr's best known residents, Mrs. Charles J. Nixon passed away in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Thursday following a heart attack. She was in her 80th year, and until her passing was quite active. She was born Ellen Cunningham in Norfolk, England; the daughter of a warrant officer in the British army. This Military environment instilled in her a deep pride in British and Canadian armed forces which was evident throughout her lifetime. She came to Canada in 1919, and the family resided in Galt until 1950, with the exception of a two-year period, 1930-32, when they lived in Ayr. In 1950 she returned to Ayr, where she had resided since. Her husband, who was a veteran of World War 1, predeceased her in 1951. Mrs. Nixon was a valued member of Christ Anglican Church, Ayr. Surviving are two sons, Charles and Edward of Ayr; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Patricia) Alpine of RR 4, Galt, and Mrs. Robert (Jane) Beattie Brantford; two sisters, Mrs. W. Yates of Birmingham, England, and Mrs. George Gee of Surrey, England. Six grandchildren also survive.
The Funeral
Funeral service was held on Monday at Christ Church, conducted by Rev. N. A. Tilford. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Robert Lovett, Robert Todd, John P. Brown, Clifford Challenger, Murray Smith and Gilbert Gemmel.
