  • Notes
    • Almost 50 years after he died, a local man who fought "tooth and nail" against building Memorial Auditorium in Victoria Park will be recognized by the city.

Oscar Lauber died in 1966, at the age of 85. But his name will soon live on in a small park on Louisa Street, the street where Lauber lived and worked for most of his life. The park is just a third of an acre (0.1 hectare) and will be built adjacent to the Victoria Common development on Louisa near St. Leger Street.

Lauber served 25 continuous years on the city's parks board, including 16 as chair. According to his obituary in The Record, he was instrumental in the creation of several city parks, including Breithaupt Park. But perhaps his biggest contribution was his fight to stop the council of the early 1950s from building the new civic auditorium in Victoria Park.

When he learned of the plan, he drafted a four-page letter rebutting each of the arguments put forward by the auditorium site committee. He argued the site wouldn't accommodate the traffic and said he didn't want to see valuable parkland paved over for parking.....
