WaterlooTownship-ChicopeeMill.jpg Located on the Grand River within a few miles of Berlin is a spot where manufacturing was commenced over three quarters of a century ago by the establishment of a saw mill. It is of concrete and, when erected nearly 50 years ago, there were not wanting many wise ones who prophesied the early, if not the immediate, collapse of the building. D. L. WEBER
Many friends and relatives will regret to learn of the passing of D. L. Weber, a well known and highly respected resident of Chicopee, which occurred at his home on Sunday morning, after a few months illness. Deceased who was aged 75 years, resided in Chicopee, for the past 47 years. For many years he conducted the Chicopee Woollen Mills and made many friends. He was a faithful member of the United Brethren Church, at Centreville. There survive a sorrowing wife, three sons and two daughters, namely, Allen of Sudbury, Collin of Kitchener, Norman of Chicopee, Mrs. W. Wright of Sheffield and Mrs. H. Horner of Kitchener. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, from the late residence and was largely attended. A simple but impressive service was held at Hagey's church and interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

D. L. Weber & Co. make them at Chicopee.
Located on the Grand River within a few miles of Berlin is a spot where manufacturing was commenced over three quarters of a century ago by the establishment of a saw mill. Thirty years later, or about 1860, a more pretentious effort was made by the erection of a woollen factory. This factory at Chicopee is still in operation. It is of concrete and, when erected nearly 50 years ago, there were not wanting many wise ones who prophesied the early, if not the immediate, collapse of the building. But it stands to-day and from it come famous blankets that have won an enviable reputation. The present proprietors are D. L. Weber and Sons. Mr. Weber purchased the property in 1877 and has conducted it successfully ever since. Latterly his sons Allan, Colin and Norman have been associated in the business. Father and sons are all practical woollen men. The Chicopee woollen mill is a one set mill and is run by water power, The product, while not so large in volume nor so varied in quality as that of larger mills, is of that honest, homemade character, which satisfies every user of blankets whether they be used for the bed, or to protect a valuable steed from the biting blasts of winter. Weber & Sons still pursue the custom of taking wool from the farmer in exchange for cloth, yarn, etc. Pure wool is used, hence an all wool bed blanket and a horse blanket with no superiors and scarcely an equal on the Canadian market to-day. The latter is made from all twisted yarn and excels even those made by others in the same way. Besides blankets, the mill produces tweeds, flannels and yarns of excellent quality. A short time ago the firm opened a store on Queen St. South, Berlin, where their goods are handled together with a few reliable lines of underwear, stockings, mittens, etc. The trade is here steadily increasing as the public discovers the sterling merit of the goods.
