      Death Removes a Prominent Citizen

The village was shocked on Saturday afternoon, January 3rd, about Five o'clock, when it was reported that Mr. John R. Dopp, one of its most respected and prominent citizens and most successful businessmen, had expired suddenly. Deceased was enjoying good health up to the day before his sad and untimely demise. He was troubled with a pain in his stomach all day but was not considered ill enough to go to bed. The family doctor had prescribed something for his pain but not being relieved any, the deceased walked over to the physician's office and had a different preparation given him which appeared to relieve him somewhat.

About five o'clock while his wife was preparing the evening meal, he expressed his desire for a slice of toast which was at once prepared for him. He ate this with evident relish and also drank a cup of tea. While his wife had her back turned towards the stove, he suddenly dropped his cup to the floor, gave a few gasps and expired in the chair before medical aid could be summoned. When the Doctor arrived, his heart was still beating faintly, but ere long the heart beating had ceased and the Grim Reaper had added another one to his hold. Death was due to Acute Indigestion.

The late John R. Dopp had been a prominent and desirable resident of Tavistock for the last forty years, with the exception of a year in California and a year in Detroit. He carried on a successful confectionary and barber business during all these years and had endeared himself to the hearts of all.

He was a lover of many outdoor sports, particularly baseball, football and fishing, and during the Summer time it was a very usual sight to see him travelling westward to some secret fishing hole of his there, to indulge in. His favourite pastimes originated by Isaac Walton.

His familiar smile and customary snappy story or joke gretted one upon every occasion and his absence will be keenly felt and difficult to fill.

He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church and independent in politics.

Deceased was born in Berlin (now Kitchener) Ontario, on March 17th, 1856 (St. Patricks' Day). When he was still a very small boy his Mother died. He then went to Buffalo where he concluded his education. At the age of 13 he went to Dunkirk, N.Y. and learned his trade of barbering. Three years later he returned to Berlin and though only a beardless youth of 16 he started in business for himself. In 1878
he came to Tavistock and opened up a barbershop in the Commercial Hotel then run by the late John Loth. The same year he was married to Hannah Lutz, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lutz, former well known residents of Tavistock. In 1886, accompanied by his wife and two sons, he went to California and engaged in fruit farming but returned in about a year's time. He then opened up a barbershop in the store now occupied by Mr. Fred Eckstein, as a wall paper store on Hope Street West.

In 1889 the family moved to Detroit but returned again about a year later. About 28 years ago he moved into the store which he at present occupies and which had just been completed.

Although appearing to be in the best of health he was occasionally troubled with his stomach and had slight attacks of heart failure. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 63 years, 9 months and 16 days.

He is survived by his grief stricken Widow and two sorrowing sons, Alvin and Norman, at home; a sister, Annie, of Philadelphia, and a brother, Joseph, in San Diego, Cal. The funeral which was very largely attended, was held from his late residence, on Wednesday afternoon (yesterday) at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. H. H, Turner officiated. Internment was made in the South Easthope Cemetery.

The business for the present will be continued by the two surviving sons."
