- Evolution of Canada's Furniture Industry by A. Edwards, Manager, Elmira Interior Woodwork Co., Elmira
My connection with this business extends back to the 60s. In those days the furniture dealer was the cabinet maker in the town....In those days a furniture man was not only required to be a mechanic or cabinet maker, but an upholsterer, a finisher, an undertaker and general jack of all trades....My next recollection was with the undertaking end of the business. It was also an unheard of thing for an undertaker to be prepared with caskets or ready made coffins in those days. It was only after the American Civil War and when American factories had a surplus stock at this time that they solicited orders for undertaking supplies in Canada. I well remember the first coffins and caskets we imported from Allegheny, Pa., and the excitement locally when a coffin of the old fashioned rosewood finish was first used.
