- GILCHRIST, JOHN
In the death of Mr. Gilchrist of Puslinch, the Township loses another of its most respected pioneers. He was born in Kintyre, Argyleshire in 1821 and emigrated to Puslinch with the rest of his family in 1843. After assisting in making a home for his parents, he commenced for himself on lot 15, rear concession 2, to which 50 acres were subsequently added and a substantial stone dwelling and a commodious bank barn erected on the site of the old log buildings. He was married in 1857 to Euphemia Wilkinson, who died in 1860, leaving him with the heavy care of a young family, added to the trial of a pioneer life. He was rewarded by passing his declining years in ease and comfort. His illness proved to be appendicitis and despite the skill of Dr. Bochart of Hespeler and Dr. Howitt of Guelph, he succumbed on January 18, 1900. He possessed a magnificent physique and was a keen participator in the boat races and other holiday games at Puslinch Lake in the old days. An expert with the axe, his services were in constant requisition and cheerfully given at many bees and the erection of many settlers' modest homes. Many firesides have been cheered by his evening visit and many a reel, he danced with grace that was once a characteristic feature of the social gatherings of the time. Interment Killean Cemetery.
-Information from the death certificate: Of lot 13, rear concession 2, Puslinch. Died at age 75 years, after 2 weeks with appendicitis.
