- Stephen Township has lost a well known resident, in the person of Frederich William Witzel, who died March 5th 1935, after an illness of several months. He was born in Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, and at the age of 18 years, came to Stephen Township, and some years later on May 11, 1880, was married to Maria Anna Finkbeiner, who predeceased him on May 3rd, 1927. To this union was born 8 children, 7 of whom survive, one son William having died in infancy, together with 38 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Also surviving him are 2 sisters, Mrs Elizabeth Berg of New Hamburg, and Louisa Wilhelm of Milverton and one son and 6 daughters, Ezra Witzel of Cupar, Saskatchewan, Mrs Ezra Lamport, Mrs Alex Neeb, Mrs Garnet Heywood, Mrs Henry Pfaff, Mrs Alfred Tilley, and Miss Irene Witzel. A memorial service was held Thursday afternoon, in the Evangelical Church at which, Reverend A.F. Pletch officiated, assisted by Reverend J.W. Johnson. The choir sang an appropriate hymn. Mrs Gordon Morlock and Mrs Emery Fahner, sang "Good Night Here and Good Morning There", accompnaied by Miss Addie Gaiser. Interment in the Crediton Cemetery. The Pall Bearers were Melvin Lamport, Gordon Lamport, Edward Lamport, William Lamport, Harvey Neeb and Clifford Heywood. A large number of relatives were present. Sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved.
