- CHRISTIAN A. BIER
Milverton and district lost an old and highly esteemed resident on Thursday night, October 26th, when Mr. Christian A. Bier passed away at the home of his only daughter Mrs. John W. Yost, and Mr. Yost, who reside northeast of the Continuation School. He had been ailing most of the summer although not seriously until the past few weeks. Mr. Bier, who was the oldest member of the family of the late Christian and Annie (Zimmerman) Bier, was in his 85th year and was born in South Easthope on April 19th, 1855. He married Veronica Yost, eldest daughter of William K. and Catharine (Roth) Yost, and resided in New Hamburg and the 5th line of Mornington for a short time before taking up residence on the Bier farm on the Mornington-Wellesley Boundary, east of Poole, where they resided to the time of the death of Mrs. Bier 17 years ago when Mr. Bier retired from the farm and has been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Yost, ever since although he also stayed with other members of the family at times. He is survived by five sons and one daughter, namely: William, of Toronto; Edmund, of Elmira; Dr. Gideon C., of Dearborn, Mich.; Herbert, of Richville, Mich.; Christian, of Woodstock, and Ednay John W. Yost. Milverton. Two daughters, Katherine and ____ predeceased him. He is also survived by the brothers and one sister, Peter, of New Hamburg; Fred, of Stratford; Dr. Roy E., of Winnipeg; and Mrs. Charles Hildebrand (Lydia), of New Hamburg. Another sister, Mrs. Ed. Wolfe, (Sarah) predeceased him. There are fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, Edna Louisa Elligsen, of Newton. The funeral, which was largely attended, was held on Sunday afternoon with service at his late residence and at Roeser's Hill Mennonite Church, of which Mr. Bier was a member. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Harvey Gampp. of New Hamburg, had charge of the services and the following were the pallbearers: four sons, W. J. Bier, Edmund L. Bier, Chris. R. Bier and Dr. Gideon C. Bier; one brother, Fred Bier, and one son-in-law, Mr. J. W. Yost. Friends were present at the funeral from Dearborn, Mich., Toronto, Woodstock, Stratford, Waterloo, Kitchener, New Hamburg, Milverton, Newton and the surrounding community. Among the floral tributes were the following: wreath. family; wreath, Canadian National Railway staff, Woodstock; spray. Evangelical Sunday School Class; spray, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Elligson, Maurice. Jack and Bill Yost; spray, Pearl. Idella. Vera and Cora Bier; spray, Mr. and Mrs. Russ. Ranney; spray, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brick; ST. Mr. Ed. Havelena and Chet. The flowerbearers were Messrs. Russell Ranney, Clarence Hildebrand, Carl Elligsen, Maurice Yost, Jack Yost and Elmer Bier.
