- Prominent Citizen Called By Death
Death removed one of the oldest and best known citizens of New Hamburg last Saturday afternoon, September 15th, when Mr. Alexander Fraser passed away at his home at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 15 days. He had been ill for several weeks. The late Mr. Fraser was born in North Easthope on May 31st, 1852, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Fraser, Scottish emigrants who were among the early pioneers of the district. He spent his boyhood days on the farm and as a young man learned the blacksmith trade at Shakespeare, coming to New Hamburg in 1871, where he continued at his trade for some years. Later he launched out as an auctioneer in which he became widely and prominently known throughout Waterloo and surrounding counties. He was also for many years in the contracting business and erected many of the bridges and culverts throughout the county. For some years he acted as bailiff of the fourth division court and was also local chief of police for many years. The deceased was one of the first members of the Nith Lodge, Independent Order of Oddfellows and was also a member of New Dominion Lodge, A. F. & A. M. In politics he was a staunch Liberal and took active part in politics and municipal affairs. The late Mr. Fraser was married to Julia Ernst, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Ernst, who predeceased him five years ago. There are left in bereavement two sons, John W. Fraser, of Kitchener, and Fleming Fraser, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and four grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, James C., of Gunton, Man., and Robert A., of Brooklyn, N.Y., the latter now 93 years of age. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon with service at his late residence conducted by Rev. H. H. Erdman, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where the deceased worshipped. Internment followed in Riverside Cemetery. The casket bearers were Messrs. Geo. J. Hahn, H. S. Hoffman, Charles Ritz, J. E. Reid, Jacob Hahn and F. J. Hartman. The funeral was attended by many outside relatives and friends from Kitchener, Waterloo, Toronto, Stratford, Shakespeare and surrounding district.
