Dr. Lloyd G. Herman was born in North Easthope Township, Perth County in Feb. 1911. He was a retired scientist with the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md. where he worked in the Institute's Environmental Services branch for over 20 years. Dr. Herman received the honour of having a new bacteria species named after him in 1982 after his research led to its isolation, species named Escherichia hermannii.
Dr. Herman received a doctorate in micro-biology from McGill University, Montreal. He was past president of the Canadian Club, Washington, D.C. and was active in church affairs at Christ Lutheran Church in Bethesda. Received the distinguished Toastmasters Award from Toastmasters International in December, 1983. Also he was an avid photographer and a master gardener.
Survived by his wife, the former Jean Wilson McPherson; a son, John of Bethesda; daughter and son-in-law Marg and Jim Goldschneider and granddaughter Christine Goldschneider of Neward, Delaware. Also survived by brothers Cecil of Shakespeare and Harold of Milverton; by sisters Sophia Roeder of Wellesley and Marjorie Buske of Pembroke.
Predeceased by one brother, Nyal.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 4 at Christ Lutheran Church, Bethesda. Spring memorial service and burial will be held at Sebastopol Trinity Lutheran Church in Perth County. Date to be announced in April.
