- ANDREW B. JARDINE 1823-1903
Andrew Bell Jardine was born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 11, 1823 and came to Hespeler in 1862. He came to the area to carry out a pipe fitting contract for a Toronto firm with whom he was then employed. His skills and ability so impressed Jacob Hespeler that arrangements were made for Mr. Jardine to move to Hespeler with his family. Mr. Jardine worked in local factories and foundries for a number of years and then, in 1870, established his own foundry business, A.B. Jardine & Company Limited, in a small frame building near the public school. In the mid-1800's he moved the business into a stone factory built on Avenue St., now Guelph Ave. Initially the company manufactured shuttles, spools and bobbins for the textile trade but later moved to the manufacture of pipe threading and cutting tools, machines and pipe wrenches. Mr. Jardine also served as the first treasurer of the Hespeler Mechanics Institute and Public Library when it was organized on June 12, 1871. He died on February 21, 1903 and is buried in New Hope Cemetery.

University of Waterloo - Jardine family fonds - 1797-1927 - Call number: GA5 In 1862 Andrew Bell Jardine, a native of Scotland, visited Hespeler, Ont. where he shortly thereafter moved his family and started a small foundry. This was the A.B. Jardine Co., one of the pioneer industries of the area.
The fonds consists of 18 items, dating from 1797 to 1927, relating to members of the Jardine family. The two pieces of correspondence and fourteen documents help to outline some of the family`s history both in Scotland and in Hespeler, including marriage certificates, character references, articles of partnership, etc. The surname on documents of Scottish origin is spelled variously as `Jardin`, `Jordan` or `Jardine`.
