Notes |
- Harry Tolton, Manufacturer, Sports man, Dies
Harry Tolton, Sr., 75, widely-known shirt manufacturer and sportsman, died at his home, 28 Ellen St., E., last night. Mr. Toltcn had been in failing health for a year and had been confined to his home for the last two weeks. Born in Guelph, March 29, 1871, the son of the late George Tolton and Isabella Hogg, he started shirt manufacturing in Kitchener in 1905. He began as a shirt manufacturer in Galt previously, moving his factory to Hamilton and Toronto before coming to this city.
RETIRED YEARS AGO
His first location here was on King St. E., in the premises now occupied by the Albrecht store. He moved Iater to a location in the Jansen Block, King St. W., and finally built his own factory off College St. He retired from active participation in the business about five years ago. Mr. Tolton was said to be the oldest member of the Ontario Commercial Travellers' Association and a past director of the organization. In his earlier years he was widely known throughout Canada and the United States as a champion bicycle rider. He won the Zimmerman trophy here in 1894. Later he toured Europe on a bicycle. He was also well known in golf and curling circles. About 25 years ago he became interested in baseball promotion and for a few years sponsored the Michigan-Ontario professional baseball club here as owner and president.
MARRIED IN HAMILTON
He had the distinction of being made a "Son of Nepthune" on crossing the equator while on a tour to South America. The organization is one to which tourists are introduced at the equator. He married Lottie M. Andrews at Hamilton, Oct. 15, 1902. He attended Trinity United Church. Mr. Tolton is survived by his wife, one son, Harry Jr., and a daughter Helen, at home. The funeral will be held from the Schreiter-Sandsock Funeral Home Monday at two o'clock. The remains will rest there until the time of service. Rev. E. O. Seymour will conduct the services. Interment will be made at Woodland Cemetery.
