  Jacob Bittner, father of Mrs. Alfred Thomas, died at his home in Doon, aged 67 years. Twenty-Five Years Ago Items of Interest Taken From the Files of the Independent FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4th, 1916 ________________________ Passing the Strasburg School corner as you came into the village of Doon on the left there was a small frame house, not painted; near the road, right on a small curve and on a small bank. This was owned by Wismers who sold it and moved to Ayr. They had several children including a daughter Esther. It was L shaped, the main section being a storey and a half with a kitchen on a lower level which opened unto the arden. There was a wind-break built on the front of the house to protect the front entance from the cold northerly winds. The eastern side had a railed verandah the full length with a door openin from the main house. Bittners were the next owners and since then has changed hands many times. Jacob Bittner, his son Jack, who committed suicide; and his daughter Ellie all worked in the twine mill. The last tenants were a Polish couple. The old man died and Katy, his wife, was deported.
