- Mrs. R. E. Stewart - Esteemed Ayr Lady Passes to Great Beyond - The death occurred on Wednesday, Sept. 10th, at 3.30 p.m., of Mary Picken, beloved wife of Robert E. Stewart, in her 72nd year, after an illness of some six weeks. Deceased was born in Hespeler, and lived there until 5 years of age when she removed to West Troy, N.Y., remaining there for a period of fourteen years. She then returned to Canada, residing with her sister, Mrs. R. Wilkinson, Galt, until her marriage to Mr. Stewart on August 12th, 1880. They then resided in Toronto for twelve years and Ottawa for around thirty-six years, coming to Ayr about eighteen months ago. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on August 12th. During her residence here Mrs. Stewart took an active part in the work of the different departments of the Ayr Presbyterian Church, and was also prominent in several social organizations. She was a woman of many pleasing qualities and was held in high esteem by numerous friends. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sisters and two brothers, as follows: Mrs. G. Atchison, New York City; Mrs. S. Hall, Chelsea-on-Hudson, N.Y.; Robert Picken, Providence, R.I., and Peter Picken, North Chelmsford, Mass. The funeral took place to the Ayr Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, and was largely attended. The services were conducted by the Rev. Patterson Hall, pastor of Knox Presbyterian Church, Galt, and the pallbearers were as follows: Messrs. George Bird, William Leithead, Adam Douglas, Murdock Robson, John A. …?... Many beautiful floral tributes gave silent testimony of the high regard in which deceased was held. Friends present from a distance included: Mr. and Mrs. James Cassie, Orangeville; Mrs. Stark, Mrs. Litster, Mr. and Mrs. George Hunt, Toronto; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Burns and Thomas Donnelly, Port Credit; Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wilkinson, Galt; Gordon Wilkinson, Toronto, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Chapman, Ottawa.
