- Miss Margaret Cowan Passes - A well-known Drumbo resident,
Miss Margaret Cowan, passed away at the Drumbo Nursing Home on Monday following a lengthy illness. She was in her 91st year. A daughter of the late James D. Cowan and the former Elizabeth Taylor, she was born at Montrose Farm, the Cowan home farm, east of Drumbo. Miss Cowan received her elementary schooling at Drumbo, and was a graduate of the Galt Collegiate Institute and the University of Toronto. After graduating from university, she entered the teaching profession. Miss Cowan taught at high schools in Kemptville, Perth, Oshawa, Drumbo and Paris, retiring thirty years ago. Miss Cowan was a valued life member of Willis United Church in Drumbo, taking a great interest in all church organizations, in particular the mission work of the church. She was also an active member of the U.C.W. and the Drumbo Women's institute for many years. Very popular with the young people of the church, Miss Cowan was well-known for her work in the Sunday School and the Young People's groups. For twenty-five years Miss Cowan held the office of secretary-treasurer of the Drumbo Public Library Board. Miss Cowan compiled the early history of Drumbo and area which was published at the time of the Drumbo Old Boys' Reunion in 1950. Surviving are two sisters: Misses Jessie and Ethel Cowan, both of Drumbo. She was predeceased by four brothers: William H. Cowan; Donald J. Cowan, a former Brant County judge; A. Gordon Cowan; and R. C. Cowan. Funeral service was conducted from the R. W. Rumble Funeral Home this afternoon (Wed.) by Mr. Percy Brown of Willis United Church. Pallbearers were W. A. Cowan, Windsor, and Stuart Cowan, RR 1, Drumbo, nephews of the deceased; W. H. MacLaren, Galt; Norman Baxter, Hamilton; Charles Sippel, Drumbo; and Alex McLaren, Drumbo. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery.
