Passing of Secretary - Treasurer of Ayr Farmers' Mutual Fire In-surance Company Comes as Shock to Community

The community was greatly shocked this (Wednesday) morning to learn of the sudden passing of Andrew Laidlaw Easton, one of the most prominent citizens of the village.

Mr. Easton was taken ill with heart trouble the latter part of January, and since that time his condition had been more or less serious. An improvement was noted for a time and he was able to leave his room for a period of ten days. Last Friday night, however, he took a turn for the worse, from which he failed to rally.

Sixty-nine years ago last April, he was born on the Easton homestead, south of Ayr, on the 6th concession of South Dumfries, now owned by Albert Gillespie, being a son of Robert Easton and Euphemia Laidlaw. When a young man of twenty, he took up farming on the 4th concession of Blenheim, some three miles from Drumbo, where he married Nettie Robinson of Falkland. There the family resided for some 30 years, removing to their present residence in Ayr in 1924.

Some 18 years ago, Mr. Easton was appointed secretary-treasurer of the Ayr Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company, of which organisation he had previously been a director. During his term of office with the company here, Mr. Easton made many warm friends and was known far and wide for his splendid business ability and fair dealing. Under his guiding hand, the affairs of the company made steady progress until it now enjoys the reputation of being one of the better organisations of its kind in the province, He was a member of the executive of the Ontario Fire Under-writers Association, of which organization he had been president for a term of one year.

Mr. Easton was one of the most Public-spirited citizens of the village and could always be counted upon to to assist with any enterprise having for its object the betterment of conditions in the village or country as a whole.

He was a valued member of Knox United Church, where he sang in the choir ever since coming to Ayr. He was also a member of the session for many years and was recently elected to the board of trustees. Before coming to Ayr, he was a member of Willis United Church, Drumbo, where he acted as leader of the choir. Interested in other village organizations, he was a 'member of the Horticultural Society, the Cemetery Board, and was a keen bowler and Curler. He also served on the local board of health, being a member at the time of his death.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. H. D. McLellan, Brantford; and one son, Robert London, four grandchildren; also by two sisters, Mrs. Walter Nichol and Mrs. J. P. McCammon, Paris; and one brother, John, of Saskatoon. At time of going to press, funeral arrangements had not yet been completed.
