PRESTON, Dec. 8— Jacob Hopf, a retired contractor who was well known to members of the trade in this section of the province, died today, following a lingering illness. He had been ill for the past seven years and in serious condition for the last three months. Born in Cedarville, he had resided in Preston 31 years. He was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and attended St. Paul's United church. Active in church work, Mr. Hopf taught the men's Bible class at St. Peter's Lutheran church for several years and also the men's Bible class at the United church for a long period. Interested in the spiritual welfare of men in the lumber camps, he made several northern trips to preach to the lumber jacks and to conduct religious classes. In addition to his wife, nee Katharine Lytle, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Roth, Preston, two sons, Arthur and Herman, both of Preston, two brothers, George of Milverton and Albert of Neuatadt and five grandchildren.
