      Elmira Druggist Was Prominent in Education and Civic Affairs; Dies at Age of 81 Years

      Augustus Werner, prominent Elmira druggist and educator, was laid to rest on Monday afternoon in the Elmira cemetery. Rev. J. Fleming of Waterloo and Rev. A. M. Hamilton of Guelph officiated in the brief but impressive service held from his late Mill street residence. A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian church on Sunday, June 13. Monday's funeral service, at which Mrs. A. Ziegler sang a solo, was attended by representatives of Grand River Lodge of Kitchener, members of Glenrose Lodge, Elmira, and several other members of district Masonic lodges. Mr. Werner had been a member of Grand River Lodge for many years, and burial took place with Masonic honors. The pallbearers were Messrs. E. G. Winn, Andrew Ziegler, George Klinck, Henry Weichel, Alvin Dreisinger, William Rahn, John Klinck and George Mulholland. Honorary pall-bearers were Mr. D. W. Houston of Kitchener, Mr. L. McBrine of Kitchener, Rev. Dr. McGillivary of Guelph, Mr. J. G. Elliott of Arnprior, Mr. Watts of Hamilton and Mr. R. L. Uffelman of Waterloo. Mr. Werner was one of the oldest and most public spirited men in Elmira. He came to Elmira 68 years ago from Kitchener, where he was born and devoted the greater part of his life to the promotion of educationand civic affairs here. He died at his late home on Friday evening at the age of 81 years, after spending the latter part of his life in retirement. He entered life in Elmira as an apprentice in the drug store then operated by Dr. J. H. Savage. Later he took over the management of the store for Dr. Walmsley and Dr. Lutz, and after the latter doctor sold his interest in the concern. Mr. Werner managed the business for Dr. Walmsley for another five years, subsequently becoming a partner. Shortly after this partnership was formed, Mr. Werner opened a business of his own. The late Mr. Werner played an important role in the advancement of education in Elmira. He was elected a member of the school board during his early days in Elmira. He was secretary of the board for many years. The present public school building was erected during Mr. Werner's term of office. He was also appointed representative for Woolwich township on the North Waterloo high school board, now the K.-W. Collegiate, serving as a member of this board for 17 years. He was the advocator responsible for the introduction of ananual training at the collegiate. When attending the Ontario Trustees convention at Toronto as a delegate, Mr. Werner was elected secretary-treasurer of the association. He held this office for sixteen years. He was later elected president and when his term of office expired he was made honorary president. Considerable interest in civic affairs was held by Mr. Werner. When Elmira was still a village he serve as treasurer for a sixteen-year period. He held the office of mayor for seven years, being reelected by acclamation six times. He was also a member of the Board of Trade and served on the board of directors of the Elmira Library since its inception until his death. Further public service was rendered by the late Mr. Werner through his work in cooperation with Mr. E. W. B. Snider to have the telephone company extend their lines to Elmira. Mr. Werner then served a 33 year term as manager of the Elmira telephone branch. In politics, Mr. Werner was a Liberal supporter. He was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church and was superintendent of the Sunday school for over forty years. The late Mrs. Werner and one son, Sheldon, predeceased him. He is surived by one daughter, Mrs. R. H. MacMicking, Edmonton, Alta., one granddaughter, Jean Werner, of Montreal, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. S. W. Werner of Montreal. Mrs. MacMicking had been attending her father during his lengthy illness.
