Otto Homuth Dies After Active Career Of Municipal Endeavors; Founded Industry

Otto Homuth, aged 68; prominent Preston business and political man and father of Karl K. Homuth. M. L. A. for south Waterloo, died at his home 479 William street Saturday morning, after a lingering illness of more than a year. Mr. Homuth always took an active interest in municipal affairs and district activities and his demise, while not unexpected will be deeply mourned by the entire community. In 1912 the late Mr. Homuth started his present business as manufacturer of woolen socks. This industry has steadily grown and to now a prosperous concern. A short time after he started the Preston plant his sons, Harold and Karl joined their father and the business is now known as Otto Homuth & Sons. He was born in the house which is still standing in the woolen mill yards in Preston and spent his entire life here. The deceased's parents emigrated to Canada in 1850 from Germany and were among the earliest settlers of Halton county. They moved to Preston later in 1898 and in1899 the late Mr. Homuch was reeve of the village of Preston having been elected by acclamation and automatically became Preston's first mayor when the village was incorporated as a town in 1899. He was village councillor for a number of years. During his long and active life he has always been an active worker in municipal affairs. For 17 years he was a member of the school board holding the position of chairman and secretary treasurer. Homuth was a Conservative and took an active part in the campaigns of the late Hon. George Clare. He was also active to the campaigns of his son. K. K. Homuth. He was a Lutheran and was for many years on the church board and represented the Lutheran Synod at Philadelphia. He was a very active member of Lodge No. 516 of the local court of the Canadian Order of Foresters and it is believed that he is the last of the charter members. For a great number of years he had the position of treasurer. For some years Mr. Homuth was a member of the parks board and at the time of his death was chairman. The funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 3.30 from his late residence where services will be held and then to the Preston Cemetery. Rev. W. H. Knauff, of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, will have charge of the services. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William Galloway, of Toronto, and Miss Clara at home; four sons, K. K. Homuth, M. L. A., Howard and Harold at home and George of Toronto; three sisters, Mrs. Edward Hagey of South Bend, Ind., Miss Alvina Homuth and Mrs. Minnie Munson, of Preston.
