      Barney McMahon Succumbs To Long Illness; On Brigade Over 25 Years

      Bernard "Barney" McMahon, for many years a faithful member of the Preston Fire Department, died at his home on King street late yesterday afternoon. The end came peacefully after an illness extending over some years. Born on a farm near Woodstock, the late Mr. McMahon, a friend to everyone who had occasion to visit the firehall, where he resided, was in his 56th year. The late Mr. McMahon's service to Preston extended over 25 years. He joined the department on December 14, 1900, on January 17, 1907, he was made captain of the hook and latter section of the brigade and on October 23 of the same year be was made assistant chief. This was when the department was reorganized. In April, 1910 he resigned from the brigade and Mr. Roesgen was made assistant chief. Then on October 9, 1915, the deceased was reappointed to the department and remained a member until July 7, 1916, when he was appointed resident driver of the new truck, giving steady and conscientious service, until illness forced him to retire. In the period when he was away from Preston the late Mr, McMahon lived for a time in Detroit and Woodstock. A member of St. Clement's church, the late Mr, McMahon was also a Member of the Holy Name Society. His father, Michael McMahon. predesceased him 25 years ago. There survives his aged mother at home in Woodstock. his wife who before her marriage was Miss Lydia Gaynor, two sisters, Mrs. C. Frank of Preston and Mrs. J. Haylow of St. Thomas; two brothers, Michael and Thomas, both of Woodstock; one daughter Miss Helen at home; two sons, Bernard of Preston and Joseph at home. There is also one grandchild, Joan McMahon of Preston. Wishes of the late fire fighter that he be accorded a fireman's funeral, will be carried out, department officials announced this morning. The funeral will be held from his late residence, Thursday morning at 8.45 o'clock. Mass will be celebrated at St. Clement's church at nine o'clock and interment will be made later in the R.C. cemetery.
