RHINEBECK - Brigadier Edward Howells, 89, a longtime Rhinebeck resident, died Friday at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck
For 38 years he was active with the Salvation Army in both corps service and war service under the U.S.O. and Social Services. He held various appointments in Pennsylvania, Massachusettes and New York State. he retired to Rhinebeck in 1963.
Born Sept. 4, 1900, in Birmingham. England, he was the son of John and Ann Howells.
On Sept. 12, 1923, he married the former Gertrude May Gooding, who survives at home in Rhinebeck. Other survivors include two sons, Edward Howells of Yonkers (Westchester County) and Earl 'Lee' Howells of Rhinebeck; a daughter, Betty Giordano of Escondido, Calif.; a brother, Jack Howells of Paris, Ontario; a sister, Annie Howells of Kitchener, Ontario; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Followed by services at 3 p.m. Both the calling hours and funeral services will take place at the Dapson Funeral Home, 65 W Market St., Rhinebeck. The services will be conducted by the members of the Salvation Army.
Burial will be at noon Monday in the Rhinebeck Cemetery.
