Notes |
- St. Clements - The village was shocked on Thursday to hear that Anthony Mattell had committed suicide in his room at his hotel here about seven o'clock the night before. He shot himself in the head with a revolver. Death was instantaneous. He was in the bar and spoke with a traveller just a few minutes before seven, and when the latter had gone in to tea, Mr. Mattel walked into a bedroom. When found, he was sitting on a chair, with his head on the window sill, and the revolver in his left hand. He was in his 36th year and was twice married. His wife and two children survive. His father, Jos. Mattell, of Mannheim, still survives him. The funeral took place on Friday.

_____________
ROYAL HOTEL.
Mr. A. Mattell is the present proprietor of this old and well known tavern. He has been here about five years but prior to that time he had a good training with his father, Joseph Mattell, in the Grand Central and North American, of Berlin, the latter of which is still owned by the father. The subject of this sketch was born near New Germany in 1869 and was married October 31, 1893, to Louisa Tasson, a native of Germany. They have a family of two, both sons. The venerable mother of Mrs. Mattell, now is the 85th year of her age, is living with the family and is still apparently in good health and able to assist in the household duties. She was born in Ainsel Riegel, Germany, and came to this country about sixteen years ago. She is the mother of six children.
The Royal hotel was built thirty-six years ago, by the late Martin Snider who was subsequently for a long time hotel keeper of Drayton where he died about two years ago. There are fourteen rooms all of which are well furnished and comfortable. The house is heated throughout by hot air and the principal rooms illuminated at night by acetylene gas. The cellar is neat and clean, most conveniently arranged and contains the latest, improved, compressed air apparatus for keeping beer in proper condition. Mr. Mattell is a good natured landlord, hence his house is worthy of the patronage of those who seek the entertainment a public inn affords.
