- SMITH, JOSEPH REGINALD was born in 1889 near Tilbury in Kent County. He enlisted in 1915 while a student at the University of Toronto, and served in England and the Mediterranean area. In May 1918 he was discharged to complete his medical education, and following his graduation in 1918 was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the R. C. A. M. C., serving until the end of the war.
His arrival in Galt is described in the June 30, 1921 edition of the Galt Reporter.
ORILLIA DOCTOR TO LOCATE HERE
DR. J. R. SMITH HAS SECURED OFFICES OF LATE DR. W. S. DAKIN.
Dr. J. R. Smith of Orillia, well known in the city, has decided to locate in Galt and has acquired the office of the late Dr. W. S. Dakin and expects to occupy it about the first of July, or shortly thereafter. Dr. Smith obtained his degree of M. A. at Toronto University in 1914 and his M. B. at the same university in 1918. He served two and a half years with the Canadian Exped. Force, serving in England, Egypt and at Madias, off Gallipoli, he has since his return to civilian life served as an intern at the Toronto General Hospital and Sick Children's Hospital and for a year and a half was assistant to Dr. W. C. Gilchrist, of Orillia, in a general practice.
In the past six months he has been the assistant physician at the Ontario Hospital, Orillia.
Mrs. Smith was formerly Miss Ida Jack of this city.
He was a popular practitioner, well liked by both the public and the profession. He was a member of the usual fraternal and professional organizations. He was chief of staff of South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, after an active association with the development of that institution, •
For 24 years he was Medical Officer of health, and when the amalgamation of the Galt Board of health into the County Unit took place, he was an associate director of that body.
During the Second World War he was a Captain in the 24th. Field Ambulance Reserve. A keen sportsman, he belonged to the Caledon Fishing Club, and the Hespeler Gun Club.
He died on February 7, 1964, aged 74, was predeceased by his wife, and survived by a son and daughter.

Galt MOH 25 Years Dies at 74

GALT - Funeral of Dr. J. R. Smith, 74, of Galt, Waterloo County assistant medical health officer, was conducted today: at Central Presbyterian Church. Dr.
Dr. Smith died Saturday of a heart attack in his office. Burial was in Mount View Cemetery here with Rev. Dr. David Gowdy officiating.
Medical health officer of Galt for 25 yeare, Dr. Smith received his new appointment last month when the city amalgamated its health service with that of the county. Born in Kent County near Tilbury, Dr. Smith came to Galt from Orillia in 1922. He served in both world wars. First chief of staff at South Waterloo Hospital here, he was also an ardent hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Caledon Fishing Club and Hespeler Gun Club.
He, was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, a Kiwanian and a Mason. His wife, the former Ida Stirling Jack, died of a heart attack in April, 1963. Surviving are a son, Donald of Galt; a daughter, Mrs. John (Margaret) Smith of Port Huron, Mich.; two brothers, Harold of Toronto and Carl of Harold, Ont.; a sister, Mrs. Harry (Shirley) Ferris, also of Harold; three grandchildren..
