    • SPARROW, THOMAS W. was born in 1833 near Berlin, a son of Thomas Sparrow, Councillor and City Treasurer of Galt. He married Lydia A. Weethee of Dover township, Athens County, Ohio on May 22 1861 in Athens. They had three sons and two daughters, he died in Toronto on March 17. 1916 at 83 years of age.

      He was educated at Guelph Grammar School, Rockwood Academy, Victoria College, Cobourg, and an American Eclectic school. In 1857 following his graduation from the Physio-Medical College of Cincinnati he was appointed professor of chemistry at that institution. He practised in Athens, Ohio, and acted as medical examiner during the American Civil War.

      He came to Galt in 1866 when his arrival was noted by the Dumfries Reformer on July 4th.:

      We call attention to the Advertisement of Dr. Thomas W. Sparrow in another column. He comes among us after a very successful practice in the State of Ohio and with a long experience in his peculiar system of medicine. The public will find him gentlemanly, attentive, and thoroughly conscientious, and as such we recommend him.

      His licence as an eclectic was granted according to the Canada Gazette of July 21 1866. His card is taken from the Nov. 12, 1867 issue of the Deutsche Canadier:

      Thomas W. Sparrow, M. D.

      Graduate of the Nature-Method (formerly the Botanical-Medical) Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Licentiate of the Eclectic Medical Board of Canada.

      In this practice are used remedies and treatments, which although harmless to the patient, have been found and used to be effective against and always curative of disease.

      The customs of the medical world, bleeding and blistering and all the painful and disagreeable treatments of some schools of practice are set aside.

      In the treatment of all forms of sickness of the lungs, stomach, liver, &c., &c., &c., this system of practice is eminently successful.

      Dr. S. gives particular attention to the illnesses to which women and children are subject.

      He moved to Toronto in 1878, and his name appeared in a black list in the Berlin Journal the next year for owing them $10.50 for printing. They could have collected in 1881 as he made a return visit at that time:

      Dumfries Reformer Nov. 3. 1881: Dr. Thomas W. Sparrow/ 551 Shelbourne Street, Toronto/ will be at/ Ebys Hotel Galt/on/ Tuesday November 15th/and at/ Klotz. s Hotel Preston November l6th.

      Dr. S. treats all forms of chronic diseases. Special attention paid to the treatment of the derangements of the Stomach and Liver. Consultation free.

      In Toronto he lived in the Parkdale area where he practised for about 35 years. He was described as one of the city's best known residents. He retired about six years before his death in 1916.

      DR. SPARROW PASSES

      After 35 years' practice in this city, during which time he gained a wide acquaintance. death came yesterday to Dr. Thomas W. Sparrow at his home, 44 Spencer avenue. The late Dr. Sparrow came from a family well known in Berlin, Galt, and district, being a son of the late Thomas Sparrow, one time City Treasurer of Galt and clerk of the Division Court. He was born near Berlin 83 years ago, was educated at the Guelph schools, Rockwood Academy, Victoria College, Cobourg, and the Physio-Medical College of Cincinnati, Ohio, where he became a professor chemistry. After closing his university career the late Dr. Sparrow took ups practice in the United States, spending 12 years at different points before returning to Canada in 1878. He had lived in this city ever since, during which time he became one of the best-known citizens in the West End. An interesting feature of his life is recalled in the fact that during the American Civil War Dr. Sparrow acted as a medical examiner for the northern forces.

      For the past six years he had been living retired. Dr. Sparrow is survived by the.

      The death occured, yesterday of Dr. Thomas W. Sparrow, at his late residence, 44 Spencer avenue, in his 83rd year.. He had practised his profession for 35 in Toronto. years, in Deceased was born near Berlin. Ont, in the year 1833, and was the oldest son of the late Thos, Sparrow once City Treasurer of Clerk of Division Court for Galt. Ont. He received his education at the Guelph Grammar School. Victoria College, Cobourg. Rockwood Academy and the Physio-Medical College of Cincinnati, Ohio, and became a professor of chemistry at the latter college. He practised his art successfully for twelve years in different parts of the United States, then returned to Canada, and has resided in Toronto since 1878. He has lived in the west end of the city most of the time, and was well known round that locality. During the American Civil War he held the position as medical examiner. He had been retired for the years. past six Dr. Sparrow is survived by his wife, three sons, Dr. W. M. Sparrow. Toronto: Mr. J. M. Sparrow, Toronto, and Mr. Chas. McK. Sparrow, of Buffalo, and two daughters. Mrs. William Britt. of Toronto, and Miss Marcelle Sparrow, of this city.
