• Notes

  Joseph and Magdalena had nine children of which three survived infancy: Magdalena, b.1832; Joseph, b.1837; and Anna, b.1843. On June 19, 1854 the Schlegel family emigrated to New York from France. From there they spent a year with Joseph's brother Nicolaus Schlegel and family in Ontario before moving to Iowa and eventually buying land on August 21, 1856 in Grove Township, Davis County. In 1857, another brother, Christian Schlegel, came and settled with his family in Iowa, also buying land in Grove Township. Joseph's grave is unmarked but his brother Christian, and part of their family, are buried in the same cemetery. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/151230867
