Notes |
- Woolwich Pioneer Dead.
One of the oldest settlers of West Montrose neighborhood died on Monday in the person of Jeremiah Letson. Both his and his wife's parents came to Canada from England and settled between West Montrose and Winterbourne, and here the subject of this sketch was born 72 years ago on the farm adjoining the one on which he died. After he grew up and was married, he settled down on a farm adjoining the old home, and lived on the place right up to his death. The farm is now owned by his son Rhodes. Having lived in the same neighborhood all his life he knew its history perfectly and in his later years loved to talk of the times and scenes of his youth. He was one of the sturdy pioneers that helped to turn the forest wilderness into fertile farms. Mr. and Mrs. Letson raised up a large family, six sons and three daughters with their mother being left to mourn the loss of a kind father and husband. The sons are: Andrew, David, Samuel, Rhodes, Fred and Byron, all well to do farmers living in the neighborhood of the old homestead. The daughters are: Mrs. Thomas Morrell, Elmira, Mrs. John Jupp and Mrs. Frank Snider, of West Montrose. Deceased was a plain, straightforward, honest man who enjoyed the respect of all who were acquainted with him. The funeral on Wednesday was attended by a large number of relatives and friends.
