Notes |
- Passing of John A. Reid
Succumbs to a Complication of Diseases After a Short Illness
There passed away on Thursday night, Dec. 2nd, after an illness of only about ten days, one of our longest residents and most widely known citizens in the person of John A. Reid, in his 63rd year. Mr. Reid was sized with a chill shortly after returned home from his club rom on Saturday night, Nov. 20th. His trouble was diagnosed as an affection of the kidneys. Later, pneumonia developed, and though everything possible was done to fight the complication, the effort was of no avail. Deep interest was taken in the case by the community at large, almost from the start, daily enquiry as to the patient's condition indicating public concern, and the respect and esteem in which Mr. Reid was held by his host of friends. Deceased was born at Reidsville, a couple of miles from the village of Ayr, and settled here early in life, where he resided almost continuously until his death. His trade was that of a contractor, carpenter and builder. For some years he conducted a shop on Northumberland Street, and latterly was foreman of the Huborn works - a good mechanic and a worthy citizen. In public life he dabbled prominently in municipal affairs, being a councilor for several terms, also a member of the School Board, and its efficient chairman for a term. In the sporting circle, he was an enthusiastic curler a bowler and dearly loved a speedy horse. He was also one of the founders of the King Edward Club and one of its main stays. But it was in the home circle that the subject of this brief memoir revealed the ideal characteristic, a true husband and a loving father - holding the respect and loving companionship of every member of the family. In religion he was Presbyterian and in politics an Independent Liberal. Mr. Reid married upwards of thirty years ago, his bride being Mary Oliver, who survives him. The members of his family are: Mrs. Irvine, Norma and Eva, Toronto, and Stanley at home. Several brothers and sisters also survive. They are: Walter, Alsask, Sask.; Andrew, Guelph; James, Rock Island, Ill.; Misses Catherine and Violet, Ayr; Mrs. Ward, Woodstock; Mrs. (Dr.) Carter, Toronto, and Mrs. Robert Gladstone, Ayr. The funeral on Sunday afternoon was very largely attended, all classes of citizens paying their last tribute of respect to their departed neighbor and fellow townsman. Interment was made in the Ayr Cemetery, Rev. J. J. Brown conducting the service. The pallbearers were Messrs. E. Dorn and L. Brown, Burford; Alex Reid, Niagara Falls; J.Q., W.L., and W.A. Reid, Ayr. Among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. And. Reid, Guelph; Mrs. (Dr.) Carter, Toronto; Mr. and Mrs. Ward, Woodstock; Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Henderson, Ingersoll; Mrs. Henderson, Woodstock, and Mr. and Mrs. Wincup, Brantford.
