  OBITUARY Magdalene Pastor Mathes 1843 - 1918 "After seven years of poor health and helplessness, death claimed that grand old lady of Hummer, Mrs. Wm. Mathes, last Friday. No person ever lived who more richly deserved the entire love and respect of her family and neighbors than Mrs. Mathes. Harsh words or ill nature seemed to be entirely foreign to her and her whole life was devoted to caring for her large family and ministering to those of her neighbors in distress. In her last seven years of suffering she maintained a courage and fortitude simply wonderful, and the thing we call death had no terrors for her. Funeral services over her body were held in the Crystal Plains church Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. W. Byrd Ray and burial was made in the cemetery near by. At the services were the aged husband and ten grown sons and daughters. Magdelene Pastor was born in Waterloo county, Ontario Canada, September 28, 1843, and died near Smith Center Kansas, January 25, 1918, aged 74 years, 3 months and 23 days. She was united in marriage to William Mathes in 1860 and to them were born eleven children, all but one of whom survive. She came with the family to Smith county in 1873, and the husband and father homesteaded in what is now the Hummer vicinity and in that section she lived until her death. In 1870 she joined the Mennonite church and lived a devout disciple of Jesus in that faith until the end. The husband and following children survive: Albert, Will, Ed and Mrs. Mary Rorabaugh of this city, Jess of Beloit and Frank of this city.
