  • Notes
    • JOHN E. KEYES 1867-1937

John Emmanuel Keyes was born in Strathroy, the son of John Keyes and his wife, the first settlers of Adelaide, Middlesex County. He was trained as a blacksmith and a carriage maker and first came to Galt in 1885 or 1887 to take a job with a local carriage maker. Within a short time of his arrival, Mr. Keyes became active with the Galt Fire Brigade and was appointed bandmaster of the Galt Citizens Band. In 1892 he served as a councillor on the Galt municipal council. In 1905 he was appointed Fire Chief succeeding James Curliss and became Galt's first full time Fire Chief on June 5, 1916 receiving a salary of $950.00 per year. He served as Chief until he retired on January 1, 1933. It was under the direction of Chief Keyes that the Galt Fire Department moved towards mechanization and away from its reliance on horses. The department's first motorized vehicle was purchased in 1917 and the first motorized fire truck used by the department was obtained in 1922. Chief Keyes also served as the secretary-treasurer of the Dominion Association of Fire Chiefs. He died in Toronto in March 1937 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery.
