• Notes

  Joseph McCartney was born in Hawick, Scotland on February 14, 1860 and came to Canada, and Galt, in 1882. Shortly after his arrival he went to work for the C. Turnbull Co. where he was employed for seventeen years. On February 14, 1900 he was appointed as clerk of the town of Galt and retained the position for forty-two years, retiring in 1942 at the age of 82. Prior to his appointment as town clerk, Mr. McCartney was a member of the Galt town council serving as a councillor from 1895 to 1899. Mr. McCartney also served as Secretary of both the Galt Board of Health and the Galt Waterworks Commission. He died on June 24, 1949 and is buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery.
