- Philip S. Lautenschlager, prominent in finance and municipal enterprises in this city for many years passed away this morning at his home, 166 Frederick st., as the result of a stroke suffered on July 10. Deceased had been in failing health since the spring of 1924, at which time he had also suffered a stroke. The late Mr. Lautenschlager celebrated his 86th birthday on May 1. He had resided in the city since 1879. He is survived by his sorrowing wife and one son, R. W. Lautenschlager of this city. Further details will be published tomorrow.

VETERAN BUSINESS MAN IS SUMMONED
P. S. Lautenschlager Pursued Active Career In Commercial Church And Civic Circles
One of Kitchener's oldest and most highly respected citizens passed away yesterday afternoon shortly after one o'clock in the person of Philip Stoltz Lautenschlager. On July 10 the deceased was confined to his bed aa the result of a stroke The late Mr. Lautenschlager had for many years taken an active part In municipal church and business affairs. He had been living retired since 1909.
The late P. S. Lautenschlager second son of Phillip J Lautenschlager and Barbara Stoltz was born May 1st 1840 In the village of Preston, the family homestead having been located on the present site of the Cherry Flour Mills. When about thirteen years of age he moved with his father and the family to a farm near the village of Petersburg where they lived for one year, the family returning to Preston.
He married Christina Kalbfleisch in 1861 who died late in 1869, no children surviving. On February 25, 1871 he was married to Margaret Snyder In Waterloo. There were two children born one daughter Jesse who died April 23rd 1880, and one son Rowland who survives.
There are still three brothers surviving him namely Jacob, Courtland ave., and Frederick and August of New Dundee. Two sisters Mrs. Andrew Poth, New Dundee and Mrs. Samuel B. Eschleman, Rochester., N. Y. having predeceased him.
In General Store
At the age of eighteen he entered the services of Mr. Geo Kalbfleisch who conducted a general store in Bridgeport. He remained with Mr. Kalbfleisch during the term of his apprenticeship for over three years. From Bridgeport he moved to Hanover and entered a partnership with Mr. Geo. Kalbfleisch. Mr. Kalbfleisch conducted a store in the village of Neustadt and Mr Lautenschlager conducted the store for the company in Hanover.
After being engaged in the mercantile interests for approximately eight years he moved to the village of New Dundee where he farmed for one year. He then opened a general store in that village which he conducted for several years. After selling out his Store in New Dundee he engaged in a retail business in the village of Plattsville which he conducted for seven years. From here he moved to Berlin in the fall of 1879 where he lived retired for about two years.
In the spring of 1880 he entered into a partnership with the late Mr. Henry S. Boehmer and in this company conducted a general store in Berlin for three years He then sold out his interest in this firm and entered the Lautenschlager and Weber Button Company which company was operating in the block above the Dunke and Co. and G. E. Potter stores. He was engaged in this business for three years.
Later he became interested the Berlin Piano Company and was engaged with this firm as treasurer tor several years. In 1907 he, together with several local men formed the Central Heating Co., which operated the central district steam heating system for several years. Since 1909 he has been living retired.
Active Career
After coming to the community P. S. Lautenschlager took considerable interest in the municipal affairs of the town and served as a councillor for the east ward. He also served the town in the capacity of deputy reeve for the year 1892. He was a member of the board of health for three years of which he was chairman. He was a member of the first board of water commissioners which was appointed in January 1899 after the town took over the water works system in 1898. On this board he served for a period of nine years January 1899 to December 1907.
He had been a director of the Economical Fire Insurance Co from 1889 until his death. He was a faithful member of the Benton Street Baptist church of which he was the oldest living member. He was also one of the charter members of the newly formed Hanover church which recently celebrated its 60 anniversary.
He held the respect of his fellow members of the congregation and during the earlier years held various positions in the gift of the church, such as treasurer and trustee. He was also engaged in the work the younger people of the church, in the Sunday school and as superintendent and as teacher of the bible class.
