- Former NASA physicist, a convicted killer, dies at Kitchener prison
Woman shot her stepson to death in London, Ont., in 1991
By Gordon Paul Record Reporter Fri., March 4, 2022
KITCHENER - A former NASA physicist who murdered her stepson 31 years ago has died at Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener.
Inmate Lois Jean Reid, 83, died on Thursday, apparently of natural causes, Correctional Service of Canada said in a news release.
In 1993, Jean Cass Reid, as she was known then, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years.
Reid, 52 at the time, shot her stepson, Brian Reid, 25, six times in the back of the head and neck in London, Ont., on June 27, 1991.
Brian Reid, a doctoral candidate in biophysics, was working late that night at the Robarts Research Institute at the University of Western Ontario when he got a call from his stepmother.
"Although there had been little contact between the two since his father, Neil \emdash a Toronto teacher \emdash had divorced Jean Reid three years earlier, Brian agreed to meet her outside the building," the Toronto Star reported at the time.
Around 1:30 a.m., he was found shot to death on a university road.
"Three hours later, Jean Reid was awakened in her cheap east-end London motel room and charged with murder," The Star wrote. "An old .22-calibre handgun was found in her purse."
The motive for murder was unclear.
Jean Reid, born in Texas and living in Burlington at the time of the killing, fired the shots just hours after being evicted from a townhouse she had previously shared with Neil Reid.
"The former physicist with four university degrees who had once worked on the U.S. space program had been unable to make ends meet with her earnings from sitting up at night with sick patients and delivering newspapers in the morning," The Star wrote.
"When police searched her 1981 Toyota while investigating Brian Reid's slaying, they found a handful of pictures of her and Neil Reid in happier times along with a bloodstained letter from her former husband proposing marriage."
The Crown prosecutor speculated on why she killed Brian Reid.
"In some sick fashion, she, left with nothing, decided to take something from him of value," David Arntfield said.
It's unclear why Reid was still behind bars after serving almost 30 years. For her, a life sentence meant just that.
