- George Gaukel's tavern now demolished was located at the site now (2009) occupied by the Walper Hotel. It was a small from structure. John George Reiner in 1852 paid 1 York shilling (12 1/2 cents) for his one night stay.

- A-1-61 George Gaukel: Administration with Will annexed of George Gaukel of Berlin.
In the name of god Amen. I George Gaukel of the Village of Berlin, being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, do make, publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and making null and void all former Last Wills and Testaments and writings in the nature of last Wills and Testaments by me heretofroe made, My will is first, that my funeral charges and just debts shall be paid by my Executors hereinafter named. The residue of my estate, property and effects which shall not be required for the payment of my just debts funeral charges and the expenses attending the execution of this my Last Will and Testament, and the administration of my estate, I give, devise and bequeath to my beloved wife Madeline Gaukel to have and to hold to her and her heirs, executors and administrators to her and their use and behalf for ever…authorize my Executors… to sell and dispose of all my real estate hereinafter mentioned, as well as all other real estate and interest in real estate that I may die possessed of and entitled to either in Law or Equity, so soon after my demise as well can be and also to sell and dispose of all my personal property and effects, except such articles and furniture as my said wife shall desire for her private use, and after the disposal of all or any of my real or personal property….My real estate hereinbefore referred to at present consists of: three quarters of an acre of land situate on the East side of Queen Street in the said Village of Berlin, known and numbered as Lot number Twenty three, according to Frederick Gaukel's Survey made by Moses Springer in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty three, which said Lot adjoins land owned by John Schroder, also Lot number one situate on the South side of King Street and West side of Queen street in the said Village of Berlin, according to the plan of the Survey of Moses Springer, and which said Plan is duly registered in the Registry office of the County of Waterloo aforesaid, on which lot[sic] mentioned lot of Land my large Hotel in which I now reside and other buildings are erected, also lot numbers Three and Four, according to the Sub division of a Lot in the German Company Tract containing about four acres of Land, in the Township of Waterloo, in the said County of Waterloo, and mentioned and described in a Deed of Bargain and Sale dated the ninth day of August 1850, from Daniel Weber and wife, and duly registered in the Registry Office of the County of Waterloo aforesaid the fifth day of May 1851: - and lastly I hereby nominate and appoint my trusty friends Henry S. Huber, Merchant, and George Seip, Cooper by Trade, Executors of this my Last Will and Testament…

Renunciation of the Executors …"The will having been proven to be truly the Last Will and Testament of George Gaukel, and the Renunciation of the Executors appointed being accepted, the Widow of the said Deceased Magdalen[sic] Gaukel, made petition and Prayer for Letters of Administration to the Estate of her said deceased husband, and having also given Bond and security for true performance of her duties as Administratrix to the said Estate, herself and two sureties in the persons of the aforementioned Henry S. Huber and George Seip, each in the sum of six hundred pounds, twelve shillings and six pence.
