- R.H. KNOWLES 1843-1937
Married: Mary L. Hartley Richard H. Knowles was born in Marden, Guelph township in 1843, the son of Robert Knowles, one of the pioneer settlers in that area. He attended Marden public school and entered Guelph Grammar School, later Guelph Collegiate Institute, in 1856. From 1859 to 1863 he worked on the family farm and in 1864 worked as a sailor on the Great Lakes. In 1865 he returned to the Guelph Collegiate and obtained the first of three County Board Certificates. He began teaching in 1866 in Dickie School near Puslinch Lake. In 1873 he received his second class Provincial Teaching Certificate and in 1876 moved to Wrigley School and in 1877 moved to Hespeler where he became principal of the Hespeler Public School. He resigned that position on December 21, 1900 and early in 1901 was appointed licence inspector for South Waterloo. He died in 1937 and is buried in New Hope Cemetery.
